Scenario: Jonny. 5 years old. Sitting at the dinner table. Staring at his yucky bowl of broccoli.

How are you going to get little Jonny to eat it? He doesn’t want it, but you know he needs it.

So you say, “Jonny, did you know that the vitamin C in broccoli supports your immunity and collagen production? And vitamin K is essential for your bone health and blood clotting!”
You continue on, mustering up all the excitement you can, putting on your best acting hat, “And the folate helps form your DNA! Isn’t that cool?”

K…you’ve lost Jonny.

He’s now on the floor, throwing a tantrum.
And he’s not going to eat it.

Every audience is different.
You won’t get anywhere unless you understand what they want.

What does little Jonny really want?

He wants to be the Hulk.

Try this: “Jonny, you know who eats Broccoli? The Hulk! That’s what makes him super strong…so strong he can do the Super Smash!”

Guess what, mama?

Copywriting frames your product with a perspective designed for your audience. It speaks to their very need. And now they want what you have. It’s way more than words on a screen; it’s sales writing.

We’re going to think of copywriting like fishing.

First, learn the kind of fish you need to catch. Then design the most irresistible bait. Through research, with craft, and dripping with creativity.

And hear me. We don’t design bait because we’re sleazy. We design bait for the genuine benefit of others. We know it’s good for them. We know it will enhance their life.

You have to have good bait. People take convincing. And you’ve got to know how to do it well.

Get them swim to you. Get them to taste that delicious worm.
