An AI Rant: Magnetic Marketing Cannot Be Done With AI
Anyone else ever argue with AI?
K. Truth-telling time.
I have a paid subscription to ChatGPT.
I’ve trained it to know my voice.
I’ve trained it to know my brand.
It knows it’s supposed to act as a strategist, a copywriter.
It knows my personality...that I’m warm and a total empath, but punchy and cut through the crap.
It knows I love analogies to life.
It knows me (ugh, or so it says)
IT KNOWS THESE THINGS.
This is me caught in action with my middle school students.
We have debates and go on rants together all the time. It’s a way of life for these preteens. And it’s awesome.
Arguing with AI
So today I go on a rant with you on the topic of AI.
Yes, it’s trained to know me. To work for me.
And yet…it never seems to fully get it.
I argue with it. Constantly.
“No, use my wording!
Yours sounds so polished and distant.”
“No, you missed it!
Why’d you take out that imagery??
Why’d you cut the emotional appeal??”
“Ugh. These sentences have no variety.
They all sound the same!”
It tries.
I push back.
It tries again.
I begin rage typing.
It just doesn't get how to write with craft.
It doesn't feel nuance.
Clichés Galore
It throws out analogies that are overused and cliché.
I give it my personal experiences.
It tries to polish them.
And in the process, it scrubs out my voice, my laughter, my rhythm.
Every sentence turns into the same compound-complex structure.
And it overuses the en dash.
(This thing right here—watch out for it.)
Which honestly ticks me off, because I like using those,
Every copywriter will tell you that this little punctuation mark of gold has been ruined for us all.
Is it Really that Smart?
Sure, we've been amazed at what AI can think of that we didn't...
AI will prompt you with questions you’ve never thought of. That's true.
But after six months in this business, I’ve actually found that AI left me feeling behind.
I've learned more from real people, actual copywriters.
AI is not a forward thinker.
It’s a research puller of common things.
Copywriters in the field know what’s working.
Early on, I trusted it too much.
If I had spent that time learning from people who were in the trenches,
people who live and breathe this stuff,
I’d be farther along.
It’s Surprisingly Wasting my Time
Honestly, I spend more time going back and forth editing with AI
than if I’d just written the whole thing myself.
When I do write the whole thing myself, I toss it into AI, yeah.
I might grab 2 of 3 tokens to use, but the rest is just me.
Maybe you’re not a writer.
Maybe you don’t know where to start,
so you plug stuff into AI and have it polish for you.
I get it.
It’s a time saver.
It feels efficient.
It “gets the job done.”
I'm telling you, though...a copywriter will do the job far better.
Bring in More Business with a Copywriter
You’ll bring in more business.
You’ll actually spend less time.
Sure, you’ll spend more money on a copywriter than on AI,
but because your branding will be on point,
you'll actually bring in more money,
so you won't even feel that pain point of paying a copywriter.
That’s the reality.
Think about it.
And reach out when you’re ready.
